Tekonsha High School Junior, Wyatt Metcalf, has one ultimate career goal...to become a Michigan Police State Trooper. He has been doing everything he can to set himself up for career success, and another piece of the puzzle just fell into place!
Wyatt, commonly referred to by the nickname "Y-T," was recently selected to attend the Law Enforcement Career Academy, held on June 23-28 in Lansing. This prestigious program has been held annually since 1975, and allows select high school students interested in a career in law enforcement to come and spend a week at the Michigan State Police Training Academy to learn all about the various components and specializations related to being a state trooper. Participation in the program is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.
Wyatt said that his passion to pursue a career in law enforcement stemmed from the help he received from law enforcement when he was a young child, and the positive impact that it left on him. This year, as a junior, he had the opportunity to attend the Calhoun Area Career Center(CACC), and was excited to be part of the Criminal Justice program. "The program goes into the ethics and morals of police work," Metcalf shared. "We learn what are the right procedures to follow to make sure that you properly handle what you are doing."
The students in both the Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement classes at the CACC, both in the AM and PM sessions, were given the opportunity to apply for this summer Career Academy program. They were told that only two students would be picked from all of the programs combined. "I was not letting this opportunity slip by," he stated. Wyatt said he had to fill out a paper application, write an essay, and even pass a physical agility test that included push-ups, sit-ups, and running a half mile. He also had to have school administrators verify his GPA was above a 2.0 and that he was demonstrating good citizenship at school. Wyatt shared that he was very excited when he learned that he had been selected as one of the two slots for this summer program!!
We think that Wyatt is an incredibly deserving student, and his hard work is paying off! After graduation, Wyatt said he plans to attend Western Michigan University to pursue a degree in criminal justice/law enforcement. We have no doubt that whatever Wyatt decides to do next, he will be successful! Great job on this accomplishment!
